Silver Screen: StardustBased on the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, Stardust is everything a good fantasy should be – the pursuit of true love and a ferocious fight for power, all sprinkled with a hint of magic. And while the fallen star may bring on a hectic series of events, the overriding feeling of the film is pure fun. It’s a delightful ride that I would highly recommend.
The tale begins in the wee village of Wall which, oddly enough, is surrounded by a great stone wall. According to legend, the wall separates the human world from the magical. It is this very wall that young Tristan (Charlie Cox) agrees to cross, to fetch a fallen star and earn the hand of his beloved Victoria (Sienna Miller). Much to his surprise the star is not some lump of celestial plasma, but the fair Yvaine (Claire Danes). And much to the surprise of them both, Tristan is not the only one who seeks the star. A band of brother Princes each seek the royal ruby necklace – the very thing that knocked Yvaine from the sky –to become the rightful heir to the throne. The evil witch Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her sisters seek to cut the beating heart from Yvaine to attain eternal youth. Luckily Tristan and Yvaine have the stars on their side … not to mention a certain Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro).
With the various side stories, the movie could have easily become muddled. Yet under the direction of Matthew Vaughn the film provides enough entertainment to pull it all off. The screenplay (by Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn) is lighthearted and whimsical. The cast of talented actors and actresses– young and old, major and minor – also serve as a strong force, holding the myriad pieces together. With plotting princes, wicked witches, pansy pirates, action, adventure, and romance, Stardust provides a little something for everyone. So put it on your Must See list – it’s far too grand to miss on the big screen. And then put it down to buy – guaranteed there will be many a night when you could use a little magic that is a fallen star! Visit the official website at http://www.stardustmovie.com/ |
